Vamana
Vāmana is the fifth avatar of Vishnu — the dwarf-Brahmin who humbled the demon-king Bali with three strides that covered the earth, the sky, and finally Bali's own head. In Kerala, Mahābali (Bali) is remembered as a righteous king whose annual return is celebrated during Onam.
The Vāmana–Mahābali story has a uniquely Kerala interpretation: Mahābali is remembered fondly, as a just and generous asura-king whose only "fault" was excessive righteousness (threatening even the devas by his virtue). Vāmana's reduction of him is read as cosmic necessity, but grief. During Onam, Kerala households welcome Mahābali back for 10 days with elaborate feasting, flower carpets (pookalam), snake-boat races, and cultural performances. The Thrikkakara Temple near Kochi is the principal Vāmana shrine, with Onam Day as its greatest festival.
