  • Place: Hampi, Vijayanagara, Karnataka (15.335°N, 76.46°E) Virūpākṣa Shiva is the tutelary of the former Vijayanagara Empire capital (Hampi). The temple pre-dates Vijayanagara (first attested 7th c. CE), was the royal chapel of Krishnadevarāya (1509–1529), and has been in continuous worship since at least the 10th c. — rare for a site abandoned as a city but whose temple was never stopped. The gopura rises 9 tiers; an inverted shadow-image of the gopura falls through a pinhole camer
