Section 1: Overview

Kashmir's Islam was woven, not imposed: the Persian Kubrawi saint Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (1314–1384) — Amir-i-Kabir, the Great Leader — brought 700 artisans, scholars, and calligraphers, gave converts the chanted Aurad-i-Fathiya (Quranic verses sung aloud, "not unlike Hindu bhajans," as Mark Tully heard at Hazratbal), and seeded crafts from shawl-weaving to papier-mâché. His son's disciple-sultan raised the Khanqah-e-Moula (1395) and Jamia Masjid (1394–1402) — wooden pagoda roofs, garden courtyards, Buddhist-dragon gargoyles: mosques like nowhere else on earth.

The Rishi movement made it Kashmiri: Sheikh Nuruddin Nurani (Nund Rishi, d. 1438) and the woman mystic Lal Ded (Lalleshwari) preached a wilderness Sufism Hindus and Muslims share — "Shiva abides in all that is" sits beside "there is no god but God" in the same shrines. Kashmir's Muslims are overwhelmingly Sunni (Hanafi) with significant Shia (Ithna Ashari) communities and Sufi orders; Hazratbal (Prophet's-hair relic) is the valley's beating heart.

Architecture as theology: deodar-wood construction, pyramid roofs instead of domes, unpaved garden sahns — the Jamia's 33,333 capacity and the Khanqah's papier-mâché interiors embody an Islam that bent toward Himalaya and temple, not Arabia. Fires (1479, 1672, 2017 spire) and rebuilds are part of the fabric's story.

Contemporary note: the Jamia's Mirwaiz-led pulpit has been Kashmir's religio-political stage for a century — and hence periodically silenced. This entry records heritage; for current affairs readers should consult multiple reputable news sources.
