Kannappa's Eyes

The Hunter Devotee

Kannappa, a tribal hunter, worshipped a Shiva lingam by offering the meat of his hunts. When Shiva tested him by making the lingam bleed from one eye, Kannappa plucked out his own eye and placed it on the lingam.

The Second Eye

When the other eye bled, he prepared to pluck out his remaining eye, placing his toe on the lingam to mark the spot — at which point Shiva restored his sight and declared him supreme among devotees.

The Lesson

Devotion that transcends social boundaries and offers one's very self is the highest form of worship.
