Markandeya Conquers Death
The Fated Day
The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati prayed to Shiva for a child. Shiva granted them a son, Markandeya, but with a condition — he would die at age sixteen.
The Embrace
As the fated day approached, Markandeya embraced a Shiva lingam in devotion. Yama, the god of death, arrived with his noose and tried to pull the boy away, but the noose encircled the lingam too.
Shiva's Wrath
Enraged, Shiva emerged from the lingam and kicked Yama to death, then granted Markandeya immortality.
The Lesson
Total surrender to the Divine can conquer even death itself; no fate is final when faith is absolute.
