Mahabodhi Temple, Bodh Gaya — The Diamond Throne

Where the Buddha Woke Up

The site where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Ashoka built the first temple here in the 3rd century BCE. The present temple, a 55-metre pyramidal tower, is one of the earliest and most imposing brick structures in India.

The Vajrasana

The Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) beneath the Bodhi tree marks the exact spot where Buddha attained enlightenment — a location considered the geomagnetic centre of the earth by some traditions. The throne is a polished sandstone slab placed by Ashoka.

The Descendant Bodhi Tree

The descendant of the original Bodhi tree still stands, propagated from saplings taken by Ashoka's daughter Sanghamitta to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE. The present tree is the fifth-generation descendant of the original.
