The most famous medieval European traveler, whose account inspired Columbus. While his India observations are brief compared to his China narratives, they provide valuable evidence of South Indian trade and religion.
He described the pearl fisheries of the Coromandel Coast and the wealth of coastal temples. He noted the presence of St. Thomas Christians in Malabar and documented the Zamorin of Calicut's court and the spice trade.
He described the kingdom of Ma'bar (Madurai) and its ruby mines, mentioning the practice of sati and the religious tolerance of South Indian kings.
