Vijayanagara at Its Peak
One of the earliest Europeans to visit Vijayanagara at its peak, calling it "greater than Rome." His eyewitness account is one of the most important foreign descriptions of medieval South India.

He documented sati, widow burning, and funeral customs. He described the cultivation of pepper, ginger, and cinnamon, and noted the practice of cremation and the Hindu caste system.

He described the Indian Ocean trade network and shipbuilding techniques, providing evidence of the sophisticated maritime commerce that connected India with the world.
