The "Father of Indology," Jones transformed European understanding of India and established the field of comparative linguistics.
He founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784, translated Sanskrit texts including the Manusmriti and Shakuntala, and discovered the common origin of Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, and Germanic languages.
He documented Indian astronomy, mathematics, and jurisprudence, and promoted the study of Indian languages, literature, and philosophy in Europe.
