The first Islamic scholar to study India with scientific objectivity. His Kitab al-Hind (Book of India) is a masterpiece of comparative religion and cultural anthropology, written with remarkable empathy and accuracy.
Al-Biruni mastered Sanskrit and studied Hindu texts, providing scientific translations of Hindu astronomical and mathematical concepts. He compared Indian religious ideas with Greek and Islamic philosophy, noting the Indian concept of cyclical time (yugas) versus linear Islamic time.
He described the caste system, Sanskritic learning, and Hindu cosmology with scholarly rigor. His work remains a crucial source for understanding medieval Indian society from an outsider's perspective.
