Hindu / Tamil / Shakta
Kaṇṇagi — the heroine of the Tamil epic Silappatikāram (5th c. CE) — avenged her husband's unjust execution by burning Madurai with her torn breast. She is deified as Pattinī Deivam across Tamil Nadu and Kodungallur Bhagavathi of Kerala, and as Pattini-Devale in Sri Lanka. Her Poompuhar statue (2001) faces the sea at her birthplace.
