Dakshineswar Kali
A village goddess given a Bengali temple and a Bengali history
The Kali temple at Dakshineswar, on the north bank of the Hooghly at Kalighat in north Calcutta, was founded in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, the zamindar of Dakshineswar, out of her own means and in defiance of a family that did not wish a young widowed woman to build so large a house of worship. Her own account of the founding was a vision of Kali, and the shrine's history was made by the fact that she appointed Sri Ramakrishna as its priest. Between 1855 and his death in 1886 he lived in the room behind the shrine and made it the centre of a movement that now has congregations across the world. That is the significance of this place: a temple founded by a woman of means, given to a priest who claimed no caste or institution, in a period when both facts were contentious.
The architecture encodes the theology. Dakshineswar is built in the bhumi or Bengal tala style, its nine-spired towers modelled on the ratna temples, and it was designed for the Bengali ritual of darshan rather than for the north Indian darshan as a rite of reception - the devotee comes, the image is shown, and the deity is addressed directly and often in the intimate Bengali register for which the shrine became famous. The langar runs permanently, and the prasaad and the fish, the machar, are part of the offering.
The goddess here is not a generic "Kali" imported from the Sanskrit canon. She is read through the Bengali vernacular Kali traditions, and she is also the Dakshina Kali of the shrine's foundation. Alongside her stand the twelve Shiva lingas of the site, set out in the compound - the body of Shiva against whom Sati fell, which is the theological argument the complex exists to make visible, and which is the subject of the companion file dakshineswar-temple.
Sources and what is still unverified
Max Muller was listed as documenting Bengal temples in this file's sources. That has been removed: I could not identify a relevant passage and an unlocatable citation should not sit in a frontmatter block.
Open questions for a guardian: how much of the founding legend and how much of the vision account is Rani Rashmoni's own and how much is later tradition, and the sources for each; the position of the twelve Shiva lingas in the site's meaning and in the Ramakrishna literature; the trust's current administration and festival calendar; and how this entry and dakshineswar-temple should be structured in the corpus, since two files describing one complex is a duplication risk even when the emphases differ.
