Lingo Pen is a culture-hero of the Gond tribes — the giver of the Gotul (youth-dormitory institution), music, and dance. His epic, recited orally over several nights, is the foundational text of Gondi cultural identity.
The Lingo Epic is recited in multi-night sessions by Gond bards (Thurdan). It narrates how Lingo released the 33 crore gods from a cave, overcame obstacles including being boiled alive, and returned to establish the Gotul — the famous Gondi youth-dormitory that is a central institution of rural Gond social life. The Gotul is a youth-learning space where unmarried youth of the village live, learn songs, dance, and traditional skills — a living tribal educational institution.
