The great Meenakshi-Sundareshwar temple of Madurai is the heart of Tamil Shaivism and Shaktism — Pandyan capital, sung by Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar of the Nayanars. 14 gopurams, 33,000 sculptures. One of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalangal — temples sung in the Tevaram hymns of the 63 Nayanars (7th–9th c. CE). These are the canonical Tamil Shaiva pilgrimage circuit.
