Tiruvarur
Where Tyagaraja was born
Tiruvarur, in the Tiruvarur district of the Tamil country, is best known as the birthplace of Tyagaraja (1767-1847), the composer at the head of the Carnatic Trinity, whose pancharatna kritis and whose centenary Aradhana draw musicians and pilgrims from across the Tamil world. The Tyagaraja Aradhana is held here annually, and the town sustains an active musical life organised around it, which makes this one of the few entries in the corpus where the "deity" is as much a composer and a saint as a god.
The town's Shaiva standing is independent of that. Tiruvarur is associated with the Tevaram hymn tradition, and the great tank Kamalalayam, among the largest in India, is the feature that gives the place its sacred geography. The previous version of this entry recorded Tiruvarur as one of four "Nayanar-birthplace cities," a claim that has not been traced to a source and that reads as an import artefact; the town is certainly a major centre of Tevaram worship, but the specific "four birthplaces" enumeration has not been verified and is not repeated here as fact.
That distinction matters because Tyagaraja is a Vaiṣṇava composer and the Tiruvarur temple tradition is Śaiva. The two coexist in the same town without merging, and the encyclopedia should not describe a Śaiva sthala as though the composer were its deity. Tyagaraja is properly the subject of an entry of his own; what belongs here is the town's relationship to him, which is one of sustained commemoration rather than of cult.
His samādhi is at Tiruvarur, and the shrine around it is maintained and kept open, with music performed in the precinct. The Aradhana is an annual gathering in the month of Margazhi, and a separate Tyagaraja Aradhana is held at Tiruvaiyaru, his own samādhi site, a distinction readers commonly get wrong.
Sources and what is still unverified
The previous body was a compressed list of bullet facts with no body prose and no sources beyond two unrelated works; this rewrite supplies the substance but cannot substitute for a guardian with the Carnatic literature. Specifically: the "one of four Nayanar-birthplace cities" claim should be traced or withdrawn; the status and date of the Kamalalayam tank should come from the Tiruvarur gazetteer rather than from a general statement that it is "among the largest in India," which is comparative and unquantified; and the distinction between the Tiruvarur and Tiruvaiyaru Aradhanas should be confirmed against the respective temple trusts. The temple is listed in the sources as a Paadal Petra Sthalam; if that is correct, the Tevaram pasurams and their author should be named, as they are not in the present record.
