Hindu / Halakki / Tribal - Ankola, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka (14.6667°N, 74.3°E) The Halakki Gauḍi tribe (~1 lakh) of coastal Karnataka — all-female agriculturalists — preserve a remarkable matriarchal tradition. Women head households; men are secondary. Their chief goddess is an unnamed Earth-Mother; rituals are performed only by women. The famous Halakki singer Sukri Bommagowda (Padma Shri 2017) preserves 700+ oral-tradition songs.
