Kāñcī — fifth of the Sapta Mokshapuri, with two kings
A city with a Shaiva sovereign and a Vaishnava sovereign
Kanchipuram, in Tamil Nadu, is listed in the Sapta Mokshapuri and is unusual in having two principal temple establishments of equal standing rather than one: the Ekambareśvara shrine, whose linga is an ākāśa or pṛthvī linga set in a hollow of the earth, and the Varadarāja Perumāl temple, a Divya Desam of the Vaiṣṇava hymn tradition. A pilgrim who visits one and not the other has missed half of what Kanchipuram is, and the rivalry is not resolved in favour of one.
The Ekambareśvara linga stands on a prākāra with a hood of a serpent that is itself worshipped, and the goddess Mīnāksī — Mīnākṣī, the fish-eyed one — shares the shrine as Siva's consort, which is the standard Tamil arrangement in which the consort's shrine faces the husband's. Varadarāja Perumāl's shrine is one of the 108 Divya Desams, and the temple's annals belong to the Śrī Vaiṣṇava Āḻvār tradition. The town also preserves a Veḷḷāla Chola-era palace precinct and traces of a fort, and the wider Kanchipuram region includes the Pallava-period Kailāsanātha temple and the Varadarāja cave temple at nearby Mahabalipuram, which show how far back the architectural tradition at this city runs.
The lists themselves are not canonical in form. The Sapta Mokshapuri as a set varies in its members across Purāṇic and regional sources, and the numbering used by this corpus is one arrangement. But Kanchipuram's inclusion is stable across those lists, and the reason is visible on the ground: it is a kṣetra in the technical sense — a place recognised by the tradition itself as a site of liberation — and it carries that status in two idioms at once.
Sources and what is still unverified
Nilakanta Sastri for the historical frame; the Āgamic and Āḻvāra hymn corpora for the liturgical claims; the Kanchipuram gazetteer for the local detail.
Outstanding for a named guardian: the source and order of the Sapta Mokshapuri list this corpus follows; the chronology of the Ekambareśvara and Varadarāja establishments, which the gazetteer treats differently from the temple inscriptions; and the current condition and custodianship of each shrine.
