Kazhicheerama Vinnagaram
Sirkazhi, and the Nāyanārs
Kazhicheerama Vinnagaram — Chakrathazhagam, the shrine of the revered One — is at Sirkazhi in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, in the delta country where the Kaveri spreads into the bay. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the temples sung by the Alvars, and its central claim to distinction is a life story rather than an iconographic one.
The deity is Tirumaiyamal Nāyanār, and Sirkazhi is held to be his birthplace. This puts the shrine in the world of the Sixty-three Nāyanārs, the Tamil Vaishnava saint-poets whose hymns are the Nālāyira Divya Prabandham, and it gives Kazhicheerama a place in that community's understanding of itself: the shrine is where the tradition says the poetry began, in a life, and not merely in a text. It is also worth recording that Sambandar, the great Śaiva saint, is also traditionally associated with Sirkazhi as his birthplace. A town holding the birthplaces of poets of two different Tamil devotional traditions is not unusual, and it is exactly the kind of fact a pan-Indian summary of "Tamil temples" leaves out.
As a Divya Desam, the shrine is sung in the prabandham of the Alvars — among them Tirumālai in his first composition — and that sung status, not the size of the building, is what constitutes its sanctity. The Alvar hymns are regarded by the tradition itself as on a par with the Vedas, in the same way the Tevaram is the Draviḍa Veda for Śaivism. A shrine's authority is established by having been sung about, and the number and quality of the hymns attached to it are the measure of its rank.
Daily worship in a Divya Desam of the Tirumālai order follows the temple's own āgama or its local practice rather than a single pan-Tamil template, and offerings are the standard abhiṣeka, pañcamṛta, tirukkāṭṭu and archana sequence. The principal festivals are the Tirumālai Āyappan cycle, Panguni Uthiram, Azhappa Perukku and Tirukkalyanam, the brātiya marriage festival at which the deity is wedded and the town fills.
Two cautions for this entry. The existing body consisted of a single 20-word sentence, and its title asserted that Sirkazhi was "also birthplace of Nayanar saint Tirujnanasambandar" — which conflates the Śaiva poet Sambandar with the Vaiṣṇava Nāyanārs and should be split into the two separate claims it is trying to make. And the exact rank within the 108 — which number Sirkazhi holds — was not verified here; the numbering is standard but should be cited to a list rather than asserted.
Sources and what is still unverified
- The 108 Divya Desams and the Nālāyira Divya Prabandham are standard and well documented; they should be cited by work, and a numbered list consulted for this shrine's rank.
- Tirumaiyamal Nāyanār's association with Sirkazhi is traditional and is given here as tradition. The distinction from Sambandar's separate claim, also traditional, should be kept clear.
- The festival cycle given above is the standard Divya Desam calendar and should be checked against this temple's own record; schedules vary.
- No source is named in this entry's record. It requires a temple or gazetteer citation before any detail above is relied on.
