Ratangarh Mātā — a Shakti shrine of Bundelkhand
A major Devi temple of the Datia region
Ratangarh Mātā, near Datia in Madhya Pradesh, is a Shakti shrine of Bundelkhand and one of the significant goddess temples of the region. The corpus records three distinctive features: that the annual Dussehra gathering at the shrine draws a very large congregation; that devotees keep nine nights of vigil on the temple ground during the Navratri; and that the shrine is administered under a trusteeship.
The vigil is the most interesting of the three and the most under-documented. Jagaran — spending the night awake in a temple court — is a widespread North Indian practice, and its forms differ enormously from shrine to shrine: who keeps vigil, what is recited, whether the vigil is continuous and communal or rota-based, and whether food is cooked on the ground. That the corpus framed this as worshippers "sleeping" on the ground is probably a misdescription of a practice in which devotees sleep there in order to be present through the night, but it should not be repeated without a first-hand account. The feature is worth documenting precisely because it is the sort of thing that is flattened into a tourist anecdote.
Bundelkhand's goddess shrines are politically and socially embedded in a way that a deity page should acknowledge: they are the focus of jatres that are also markets and social gatherings, they are supported by landholding families, and they sit within a regional religious geography in which Datia, Orchha, Tikamgarh and Jhansi each have their own major Devi shrines. The corpus's frontmatter assigns this shrine the divine function "wealth", which is a machine-generated value that nothing here supports; the shrine's prasāda and boon-giving should be described from its own account rather than from a category field.
Sources and what is still unverified
The Purāṇic Devī material and Majumdar for the general framework; the shrine trustees' account for the local facts, which has not been obtained.
For a named guardian, ideally a Bundelkhandi speaker: the shrine's foundation legend and chronology from its own trustees; the jatre calendar and the scale of attendance in recent years, with the "millions" figure in the old description treated as a promotional round number rather than a count; and the exact form and observance of the nine-night vigil.
