The earliest event recorded here is dedication, 1510. Through the centuries, the temple witnessed golden rose, 1953. Afonso de Albuquerque takes Goa on St. Catherine of Alexandria's feast day — the future cathedral is vowed to her.

Across the square from the Basilica of Bom Jesus rises an even vaster neighbour: Se Cathedral — 250 feet long, 181 wide, facade 115 feet high — the seat of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and, by common account, the largest church in Asia, bigger than any in Portugal itself.
