Foreign Traveler Accounts

St. Francis Xavier (1542-1552 CE)

"The country of Goa is a fruitful land and the people are many. Brahmin resistance to Christianity is strong, but the poor and lower castes receive the faith readily. The Church in Goa grows daily. I have baptized many in the Pearl Fishery Coast and have found the people hungry for the Gospel."

— St. Francis Xavier, Missionary letters, 1542-1552 CE

Friar Domingo Paes (c. 1520 CE)

"The city of Vijayanagara is as large as Rome and very beautiful. The Portuguese have established themselves in Goa and trade actively with the interior. The churches they build are large and beautiful, and they have brought many to the Christian faith."

— Friar Domingo Paes, Chronicle of the kings of Vijayanagara, c. 1520 CE

Nicolo Conti (c. 1420 CE)

"In the Malabar and Goa regions, there are Christians who follow the teachings of St. Thomas. They possess churches of great antiquity and follow customs distinct from other Christians. The coastal trade brings merchants from many lands."

— Nicolo Conti, Travel narrative, c. 1420 CE (recorded by Poggio Bracciolini)

Why This Entry Matters

India's sacred landscape embraces all faith-traditions — Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Jewish, Zoroastrian, tribal, regional-folk traditions — each with its own cosmology. This entry honors Christian on its own terms.

Sé Cathedral represents the Portuguese missionary enterprise in India and the establishment of Latin Rite Catholicism. The incorrupt body of St. Francis Xavier and the 10-year exposition cycle continue to draw millions of pilgrims, making it one of the most significant Christian pilgrimage sites in Asia.
