Orthodox Judaism

Section 1: Overview

[BEGINNER]

Orthodox Judaism is the most tradition-centred branch of Judaism, the religion of the Jewish people. Judaism teaches belief in one God — the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — who gave the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible) to Moses at Mount Sinai. For Orthodox Jews, both the Written Torah and the Oral Torah (interpretations and traditions later written in the Talmud) are divine revelation, binding in every generation.

Orthodox Judaism's defining commitment is to halakha — Jewish law — as it governs daily life: prayer, the Sabbath (Shabbat), the dietary laws (kashrut), the festivals, family life, and the whole rhythm of the year.

Key practices:

• Shabbat — from Friday sunset to Saturday nightfall, a day of rest, prayer, and family
• Kashrut — keeping kosher: the biblical dietary laws
• Daily prayer — three daily services, often in a synagogue with a minyan (quorum of ten)
• The festivals — Passover, Shavuot, Sukkot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur
• Talmud study — lifelong learning is a sacred duty

[INTERMEDIATE]

Historical background: The term "Orthodox" emerged in the 19th century, in response to the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) and the Emancipation of European Jews. It designated those who, unlike the new Reform movement, insisted on the continuing authority of the Torah and halakha. Its own self-understanding, however, is that it is simply traditional Judaism — the unbroken practice of the Jewish people.

The structure of Jewish tradition:

• The Written Torah (Torah she-bi-khtav) — Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
• The Oral Torah (Torah she-be'al-peh) — the rabbinic interpretation, codified in the Mishnah (c. 200 CE) and elaborated in the Talmud (the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds, completed c. 5th–6th centuries)
• The Shulchan Aruch (16th century) — the authoritative code of Jewish law compiled by Joseph Karo, with Moses Isserles' gloss for Ashkenazi practice

Major internal streams:

• Modern Orthodoxy — integrates traditional observance with engagement with the modern world; figures like Samson Raphael Hirsch (d. 1888) articulated this path; Yeshiva University (New York) is a leading institution
• Haredi Judaism — the "God-fearing" ultra-Orthodox stream, emphasizing separation from secular culture, yeshiva study, and community life; includes Hasidic and Lithuanian (Mitnagdic) communities
• Hasidism — the 18th-century devotional movement founded by Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, emphasizing joy, prayer, and the charismatic Rebbe (spiritual master); major dynasties include Lubavitch (Chabad), Satmar, and Ger

The Jewish year and lifecycle: Orthodoxy preserves the full cycle — the weekly Torah portions, the monthly sanctification of the new moon, the festivals, and the lifecycle events of brit milah (circumcision), bar/bat mitzvah, marriage under the chuppah, and mourning according to the laws of shiva.

Section 2: Belief & Practice

[BEGINNER]

The Thirteen Principles of Faith — formulated by the great medieval philosopher Maimonides (1135–1204) — summarize Orthodox belief: the existence and unity of God, His eternity, His creation of the world, prophecy, the giving of the Torah to Moses, and the coming of the Messiah.

Daily and weekly practice:

• Morning, afternoon, and evening prayers, with the Shema ("Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One") and the Amidah (standing prayer)
• Shabbat begins with candle-lighting and Kiddush (sanctification over wine), and includes the special Shabbat meals, synagogue services, and the Havdalah ritual marking its end
• Kashrut — separating milk and meat, avoiding forbidden foods (pork, shellfish), and using only kosher meat slaughtered according to Jewish law

Section 3: Orthodox Judaism Today

[BEGINNER]

Orthodox Judaism is a significant and growing part of the Jewish world, especially in Israel, the United States, and Europe. In Israel, it is central to national life, with the Chief Rabbinate and religious courts overseeing marriage and dietary law. Worldwide, the Haredi population, with its high birth rate, is growing rapidly.

Contemporary themes:

• The revival after the Holocaust — the murder of six million Jews in Europe devastated Orthodox communities; their rebuilding in Israel, America, and Europe is one of the great stories of 20th-century Jewish history
• Chabad-Lubavitch — now a global movement with emissaries (shluchim) in hundreds of cities, offering Jewish education and observance to Jews of every background
• The State of Israel — home to the largest Jewish population, where Orthodox life, yeshivas, and the Jewish calendar shape public culture
• Conversion and outreach — Orthodox communities actively welcome seekers through organized conversion programs
• Interior debates — the roles of women, engagement with secular society, and relations with non-Orthodox Jews are live and sometimes contested questions

In India, the historic Jewish communities — the Cochin Jews of Kerala, the Bene Israel of Maharashtra, and the Baghdadi Jews of Mumbai — have long been part of the subcontinent's plural fabric, though most have emigrated to Israel since 1948. Their synagogues, cemeteries, and traditions remain treasured heritage sites.

Known Limitations

1. Orthodox Judaism is internally diverse (Modern Orthodox, Haredi, Hasidic); this entry compresses that diversity.
2. The term "Orthodox" is a modern label; the tradition predates the name by millennia.
3. The relationship of halakha to modern state and society is complex and contested.
4. The impact of the Holocaust and the founding of Israel on Orthodox life is noted but warrants deeper treatment.
5. Women's roles and contemporary debates are treated only briefly.
