Reform Judaism

Section 1: Overview

[BEGINNER]

Reform Judaism is the liberal, modernizing branch of Judaism that emerged in early 19th-century Germany and became the largest Jewish denomination in North America. Its central idea is that Judaism is a living, evolving religion: the Torah and Jewish law are divine in inspiration but were given to be interpreted afresh in every age, in light of reason, ethics, and the realities of modern life.

Reform Jews share the core Jewish faith — one God, the covenant with the Jewish people, the Torah — but emphasize the ethical message of the prophets over ritual observance. They affirm universal values: justice, compassion, the dignity of every person, and the duty to repair the world (tikkun olam).

Key features:

• Progressive interpretation — halakha (Jewish law) is guidance, not immutable decree
• Vernacular worship — prayers in the local language alongside Hebrew
• Equality — women and men participate fully, including in the rabbinate
• Modern music and shortened liturgy — worship adapted to contemporary taste
• Social justice — active engagement in civil rights, peace, and humanitarian work

[INTERMEDIATE]

Origins: Reform Judaism grew out of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskalah) and the Emancipation of European Jews in the late 18th–19th centuries. As Jews gained citizenship and entered European society, many felt the traditional forms of observance were outdated. Early reformers — including the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (d. 1786), whose German translation of the Torah was a landmark — sought to harmonize Jewish faith with modern reason.

The movement takes shape (19th century):

• The Hamburg Temple (1818) introduced German prayers, organ music, and a shorter liturgy — a symbolic break with tradition
• Abraham Geiger (d. 1874) — the movement's foremost theologian — argued that Judaism's essence is its ethical-monotheistic message, and that laws are the product of particular historical periods
• Samuel Holdheim (d. 1860) — took a more radical position on halakha
• The Rabbinical Conferences of the 1840s in Germany defined Reform's principles: the moral law is eternal; ceremonial law is subject to change

The Pittsburgh Platform (1885): In America, a group of rabbis led by Kaufmann Kohler issued the Pittsburgh Platform, declaring Reform Judaism's commitment to reason, ethics, and universalism, and its rejection of laws deemed incompatible with modern civilization.

Spread and evolution:

• Reform Judaism became the largest Jewish denomination in the United States, with its centre at the Hebrew Union College (founded 1875 in Cincinnati)
• The Columbus Platform (1937) moderated the early universalism, re-emphasizing tradition, Hebrew, and the Jewish people's survival after the rise of Nazism
• After the Holocaust and the founding of Israel, Reform increasingly embraced Jewish peoplehood, Zionism, and tradition while retaining its liberal ethos

Worship and practice today: Reform synagogues use the Union Prayer Book and its successor Mishkan T'filah; many hold services with mixed seating, Hebrew and English prayers, and modern sermons. Rabbi Regina Jonas (ordained 1935 in Germany) and, from 1972, the American Sally Priesand pioneered the ordination of women — a defining Reform contribution to modern Judaism.

Section 2: Belief & Practice

[BEGINNER]

Reform Judaism teaches:

• The unity and goodness of God, and the human being as created in God's image with free will and responsibility
• Torah as an ongoing conversation — inspired by God, interpreted through reason and conscience
• The prophetic ethic — justice, righteousness, and care for the vulnerable as the heart of Judaism
• The Messiah as an age of peace and justice to be worked toward, rather than a single person to be awaited

Practice:

• The major festivals — Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, Shavuot, Sukkot — are fully observed, often with egalitarian and creative liturgy
• Shabbat is honoured, with flexible observance
• Kashrut is a matter of personal choice; many Reform Jews observe modified dietary practices or none
• Lifecycle events — brit milah, bar/bat mitzvah, marriage, mourning — are celebrated with full Jewish meaning and full participation of women

Section 3: Reform Judaism Today

[BEGINNER]

Reform Judaism is today a global movement — the World Union for Progressive Judaism (founded 1926) links congregations on every continent. It remains the largest Jewish denomination in North America and has growing communities in Europe, Latin America, Israel, and Australia.

Contemporary emphases:

• Inclusion — full welcome for interfaith families, LGBTQ+ Jews, and Jews of all backgrounds; the ordination of openly LGBTQ+ rabbis and support for same-sex marriage
• Israel and diaspora — support for Israel's security alongside advocacy for a just peace
• Tikkun olam — Reform congregations are among the most active religious communities in social-justice work: civil rights, immigration, climate, and racial justice
• Education — Reform day schools, camps, and lifelong learning are cornerstones of the movement

Reform Judaism's historical importance lies in demonstrating how a living tradition can adapt to modernity while preserving its ethical and spiritual core — a model that has influenced every branch of modern Judaism.

Known Limitations

1. The diversity within Reform Judaism (from near-traditional to very liberal) is compressed.
2. Early Reform's rejection of Jewish peoplehood and Zionism is historically important but has been largely reversed; the evolution is simplified here.
3. Relations with Orthodox Judaism remain complex and at times contentious.
4. The American dominance of the movement's modern history is emphasized; European, Israeli, and Latin American Reform deserve fuller treatment.
