Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775-1835)

Muthuswami Dikshitar was the eldest of the Carnatic music trinity. Unlike Tyagaraja who composed in Telugu/Tamil, Dikshitar composed primarily in Sanskrit. His kritis are known for their complex ragas and scholarly lyrics.

His Connection to Kumbakonam

Dikshitar visited Kumbakonam regularly and composed several kritis at the Adi Kumbeshwar temple complex. He is said to have:

  • Learned music from his father and the deity at these very temples
  • Composed kritis praising the temple deities
  • Used rare ragas and complex prayogas (musical phrases)

The Mahamagam Festival

Every 12 years, the Mahamagam tank fills with water from the Ganga (brought by boat). Millions bathe at the tank seeking moksha. The last Mahamagam was in 2024.
