Purandara Dasa (1484-1569)

Purandara Dasa was one of the greatest saints and composers in Indian history. Born in Karnataka as Virabhadra, he was a wealthy minister who gave up everything to become a bhakti saint. He composed:

  • 4,75,000 compositions (according to tradition; about 1,000 survive)
  • 360 keertanas (devotional songs)
  • Numerous harikathas (devotional storytelling)

Social Reform Through Music

Purandara Dasa was a radical voice for his time:

  • Criticized caste discrimination
  • Promoted women devotees
  • Made bhakti accessible to all classes
  • Composed in local languages (Kannada) rather than only Sanskrit
