Nilackal Church

The Church That Died and Rose Ecumenical

Six of the seven churches stand on the coast. The seventh — Chayal, today's Nilackal — stood in the forested Ghats on the Chera–Pandya trade road to Madurai. When dacoits made the hills unlivable, its people carried the faith down to Kanjirapally, Ranni, and Niranam — and the jungle took the stones.

What Is Here

• The ecumenical church (1985): rebuilt 3 km from the historic site on 1976 government land — administered by a board with equal membership from six churches: a structure of unity no other Thomas site attempts
• The forest remnants: scattered old-church stones in the Sabarimala woods, shown by local guides
• The Sabarimala corridor: Nilackal is the pilgrims' base camp — Ayyappa season fills the same roads Thomas's descendants walk
