Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple — The Cosmic Body
The Largest Temple on Earth
The largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world (156 acres), with 21 gopurams, 50 shrines, and 9 sacred tanks. The main deity is a reclining Vishnu on the serpent Adisesha.
The Seven Chakras
The temple has seven concentric walls (prakaras) representing the seven chakras of the human body, with the innermost sanctum accessible only to temple priests. This architectural symbolism makes Srirangam a physical representation of yogic cosmology.
Vijayanagara Reconstruction
The temple was sacked by the Delhi Sultanate in 1311 and later rebuilt by the Vijayanagara Empire. The Vijayanagara inscriptions describe the temple's reconstruction after Muslim invasion, recording the names of donors and architects.
