The Legend of Venkateswara

According to legend, Venkateswara appeared on the Tirumala hills during the Kali Yuga to save devotees who were suffering. The story goes:

  1. The goddess Lakshmi (in some versions Varahasayi) became angry and left Vaikuntha
  2. She was reborn as a poor girl named Vedavalli in Andhra
  3. Vishnu searched for her, taking the form of Srinivasa
  4. He married her at this place and has remained here ever since

Bhadrachala Ramadasu (1620-1682)

The saint-composer Bhadrachala Ramadasu, also known as Bhadrachalam Setti, was a devotee who:

  • Composed 32 Keertanas (devotional songs) dedicated to Venkateswara
  • Wrote the Venkateswara Suprabhatam (morning prayer)
  • Built the temple's famous bell tower (Ghanta)
  • Was a master of Telugu and Sanskrit poetry
  • His keertanas are sung daily at the temple

Temple Administration

The temple follows the Ekantika Aaradhana system where only 12 archakas (priests) can enter the Garbhagriha (sanctum). They belong to the Niyogi Brahmin community and follow strict procedures laid down by Ramanuja.
