The central shrine of Sikhism. Foundation stone laid 1588 by Guru Arjan (5th Guru); completed 1604 with the installation of the Adi Granth. Gold-plated dome added by Maharaja Ranjit Singh 1830. The four doors of the temple symbolize openness to all four castes, all four directions, all peoples.
