Ambājī Mātā of Arasur
Ambaji (Arasuri Ambaji) is one of the 51 Śakti Pīṭhas of the Hindu tradition, where — according to the myth of Satī's dismemberment — her heart fell when Viṣṇu's cakra divided her corpse to free Shiva from his grief-driven tāṇḍava.
The imageless sanctum
A distinctive feature of Ambaji: there is no image in the sanctum. Instead, the central object of worship is a marble śrī-yantra — the geometric diagram of Tripura Sundarī — inscribed with the bīja-mantras of the goddess. Pilgrims offer darśan to this yantra. The imageless worship is said to preserve the deity's formless (nirguṇa) nature.
A procession image of the goddess (Ambā riding a lion) is displayed during festivals, but is NOT installed in the sanctum.
Bhadarvi Poonam
The annual Bhadarvi Poonam (Bhādrapada Pūrṇimā, September) is one of India's largest pilgrim gatherings — over 2 million devotees walk padyatra from Ahmedabad (200 km), Gandhinagar, Palanpur, and surrounding districts to reach Ambaji on the full-moon day. The walk is barefoot; pilgrims carry red banners and chant Jai Ambe.
Gabbar Hill
The original Śakti Pīṭha is not the main temple but Gabbar Hill (literally "great hill") about 4 km away — a naturally-formed rock outcrop said to be the original resting place of the heart of Satī. Pilgrims climb 999 steps to reach the hilltop shrine, where a single eternal flame (nanda-dīpa) burns.
The goddess and her form
Ambājī is worshipped as a Śakti — the feminine power of the tradition, and one of the 51 sites where Satī's body was divided as Vishnu's cakra wheeled through it. Her myth is the Devi Māhātmya (the Chandi or Durga Saptashati), which supplies both the account of the dismemberment and the frame in which she is praised. The temple is a Śakti Pīṭha rather than a Vaishnava or Shaiva site, and the goddess is addressed directly: Om Ambāyai Namaḥ, or simply Jai Ambe.
Her vehicle is given as the lion (siṃha), which in Gujarati Shakta worship becomes the tiger (puli). North Indian Puranic text keeps the lion reference; the South Indian rendering gives the tiger, and Gujarati practice carries both.
What a pilgrim brings
The offerings are Gujarat's own festival materials rather than rare ritual substances: a red chunri, silver or gold ornaments, coconut, and kesari halva — the saffron-and-ghee sweet that is the signature of Gujarati celebration. Red and gold are her colours. The chunri is not decoration but a vow fulfilled: a woman walks to the temple carrying the chunri she promised.
The great gathering
Bhadarvi Poonam (Bhādrapada Pūrṇimā, September) draws more than two million people on foot. They come by padyatra from Ahmedabad, some 200 km away, and from Gandhinagar, Palanpur and the surrounding districts. The walk is barefoot, the banners are red, and the chant is Jai Ambe. The scale of it is the point: Ambaji is not a temple visited but a pilgrimage walked.
A note on this entry
An earlier version carried invented quotations attributed to foreign travellers. They have been removed and must not be restored. This entry rests on the Devi Māhātmya, on the standard Shakti Pīṭha geography, and on published work on Gujarati temple architecture — not on travel writing no one can verify.
