Sarasvatī of Basara
A goddess of speech on a hill in the Godāvarī delta
The Basara Sarasvatī temple stands on a hill in the Godāvarī delta country of Nirmal district, Telangana, and is counted among the 108 Divya Deśams — the shrines sung by the twelve Āḻvārs. That status is the interesting thing about it. The Divya Deśam list is a Vaiṣṇava list, and a Sarasvatī temple in it is a reminder that the Āḻvārs' geography and the temple institutions of the eastern Deccan overlapped more than the standard "Vaiṣṇava versus Śaiva" map suggests: in the Telugu country the Vaiṣṇava and Smārta establishments share personnel, donors and kalpataru trees, and a Vaiṣṇava pilgrim-taxonomy and a Sarasvatī cult meet in shrines like this one.
The deity is Sarasvatī as Devī — a female form of the goddess of speech, learning, music and memory, worshipped here as Devī Sarasvatī and dressed and decorated in the manner of the Lakṣmī images of the region, with the Veṇī and the manuscript and the tamburu. Basara's hill setting, its steps and its maṇṭapa are the ordinary apparatus of a Deccan hill shrine. The place name Basara is said to have a Sanskrit eytmology in the vasara (quarry, or the light of the morning), and the shrine's kalṣepa (age tradition) is a matter of local claim that has not been checked against an inscription.
The corpus frontmatter's claim that this is "the only Sarasvatī shrine in South India" is not correct and should be struck. Sarasvatī shrines are found in Kumbakonam, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur and elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, and in the Telugu country; what is distinctive here is the Divya Deśam singing and the hill. What is genuinely undocumented, and what a local contributor should supply, is Basara's own kalṣepa, the deity's utsa (birth festival, which in the Telugu country is śayanā — the bride-night of the goddess with Viṣṇu), the list of the learned brāhmaṇa priests of the shrine, and the agrahāra around it.
