Mother House, Kolkata
Where Love Is Buried — and Still Working
At 54A AJC Bose Road, behind an unremarkable gate in a by-lane, lies the most visited tomb in Kolkata: a plain stone on a ground floor, engraved "Love one another as I have loved you." Since February 1953 this has been home — and since 13 September 1997, resting place — of Mother Teresa.
What Is Here
- The tomb: ground-floor chapel room; sisters on duty guide pilgrims; petition box nearby, honoured at Friday Mass
- Mother's Room: bed, desk, benches, cabinet, and wall pictures preserved as on the night of 5 September 1997
- The chapel: daily Mass 6 AM with sisters and volunteers; group pilgrim Masses by arrangement
- The work: volunteers register here for the homes — Nirmal Hriday, Shishu Bhavan, Prem Dan — fanning out across the city each morning
Visiting
- Hours 9 AM–12 noon and 3–5:30 PM; closed Thursdays; no entry fee — walk to the by-lane gate, the sisters receive all
- Silence at the tomb; modest dress; photography only where the sisters permit
- Pair with Beth El and the Bow Barracks Christmas lanes for a full day of minority Kolkata
