Five Million Pilgrims to St. George

Edappally Palli — Asia's largest shrine of St. George — draws some five million visitors a year to a parish the Syrian Christians raised, by tradition, in AD 593, on land given by the Hindu Raja of Edappally. First dedicated to Marth Mariam (Mother Mary), it took the warrior-saint's name as his devotion swept the coast.

Layers

• 593 → 1080 → 1411 → 1813: four buildings; the 1080 church now serves as adoration chapel; the present pile faces Kochi's traffic with equanimity
• The miracle well: holy water with healing repute, drawn daily
• The Raja's palm tree: the feast's flag-permission custom remembers centuries when the parish sought the Edappally Raja's sanction — 101 sweets offered, palm-tree mast carried by palace elephant (today: the vicar receives them)

The Feast

• April 25: flag-hoisting after 9-day novena; May 1: the statue — dripping with devotees' gold — rides its carved teak chariot through betel-leaf showers; May 3–4: feast days; May 10–11: octave
• Fowl offerings: hens and eggs for protection from snakes (George spears the serpent); auctioned, cooked, shared — vedi-nercha fire-vows and body-part ex-votos alongside
• Tens of thousands "cutting across religion, caste, and creed" — the parish's own description, earned yearly
