Kottakkavu Church

The Church That Would Not Move

Of the seven apostolic churches, only three — Palayoor, Kottakkavu, Niranam — claim unbroken continuity on their original ground. Kottakkavu makes the claim most tangibly: the granite Persian cross in its forecourt chapel, cut around 880 CE by the Persian bishops Sabor and Proth, still stands where nineteen centuries of prayer stood.

What Survives

• The Sliva: Persian cross on granite — among the oldest Christian sculptures in India, sheltered in its own chapel before the church
• The old church (1308 fabric): rebuilt around the ancient wooden core; reconstructed again and blessed in 2002
• The elephantine wall (aanavathil) on the west and the baptism pond where tradition says the Apostle baptised — both preserved
• Market history: the parish donated two acres for Paravur market; the ancient Cross-stand became the marketplace — faith and trade sharing one square, as at Muziris

The Two Paravurs

After the Coonan Cross Oath, Paravur split into two living churches yards apart: the Syro-Malabar Valiyapalli (this entry) and the Jacobite Cheriyapalli (1566, tomb of Metropolitan Gregorios Abdal Jaleel) — a schism you can walk across in a minute, and a lesson in how one apostle's children disagreed.
