The Lady on the Hill

Eighty metres above the Arabian Sea, at the end of a climb past Koli fishing villages and Bandra's old Portuguese streets, stands Mumbai's beloved Marian shrine: Mount Mary (Mot Mauli — Beloved Mother). Year-round she receives the worried and the grateful of every religion; every September she receives lakhs.

Four Buildings, One Devotion

• 1570: Jesuit mud oratory with a wooden Madonna from Portugal.
• 1640: enlarged chapel for the garrison and growing flock.
• 1700: Muscat pirates hack the statue's forearm (seeking gold); bees, says tradition, rout them. The damaged statue rests; Our Lady of Navigators substitutes — until both are restored in 1761.
• 1902–04: today's church, materials hauled by sea and bullock-cart; minor basilica 1954; gold crowns for Mother and Child the same year.

Practices

• Mannat: vows tied with wax offerings — limbs, houses, cradles — lit inside with whispered bargains of gratitude.
• The 136 steps: pilgrims climb from the east, pausing at the 1678 cross halfway.

• Sunday Masses run morning-only; evenings belong to the sea breeze and the city lights.
