Bene Israel of Mumbai
A Jewish community of the Konkan, and a contested ancestry
The Bene Israel ("sons of Israel") are a Jewish community of the Konkan coast, concentrated in Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Ahmednagar, and the smaller settlement around Panchgani and Jalgaon in the Deccan. They are the older of the two historic Jewish communities of western India, the other being the Cochin Jews of Kerala, and they differ from them in exactly the point that is most often asserted about them: the Bene Israel hold a tradition of descent from Israel, while the Cochin community is documented as a body of Sephardic exiles. The Bene Israel descent claim is traditional and is not established; nor is the rival account, which holds that part of the community descends from local converts. Conversion records do exist for some families, and the composition of the community has never been settled by evidence. Their traditional origin story — a migration by sea, sometimes by way of a place called Pañjā in Egypt or Syria, and in some versions a return to Jerusalem before the dispersal — is folklore with a theological purpose, and belongs in this entry as folklore.
The material fact of the community is a working one: a Konkan Jewish community with Torah scrolls, a Sabbath kept on Friday night and Saturday, a prayer house for the morning and evening prayers, a distinctive melekh tradition of unaccompanied Hebrew devotional singing, and a household discipline of kashrut-like practice in which many families eat fish on the Sabbath and observe Yom Kippūr and the other fasts. Two features are distinctive in the Indian context and are not to be generalised away: the community's not historically practising circumcision, and its long kinship and marriage alliances with the Baghdādi and other Jewish migrants in Bombay — the Sassoon and the other families of the nineteenth-century Jewish enterprise — with whom the Bene Israel are frequently conflated. The synagogues associated with the elite Jewish families of Bombay, and the Bnei Menashe of the North-East who claim Bene Israel descent and have settled in Israel since the twentieth century, are separate subjects with their own documentation.
Sources and what is still unverified
- The community's own scholarship — its centenary histories and the Bombay Jewish community archives — exists and is not held here; a specific title and author must be supplied by a guardian.
- Thane / Mumbai District Gazetteers (Government of India gazetteer series) — for the settlement geography.
- The corpus frontmatter's "2,000-year-old" claim is unsupported and should be struck: the community's documented history in India is roughly five centuries, and its claimed history is longer than any documentation.
- Unverified: the descent-versus-conversion question, the "Panja" origin story as fact, and every date in the frontmatter.
