Long before British publisher F. H. Ayers registered a secularized 100-square children's board in London in 1892 under the title "Snakes and Ladders," the game flourished across the Indian subcontinent as a contemplative ritual instrument and visual catechism of Karma, Sāṁkhya-Yoga, Bhakti, and Mokṣa. On the standard 8×9 72-square Vaiṣṇava-Yogic board (preserved in 18th- and 19th-century manuscripts and expounded in Harish Johari's 1975 commentary), the squares ascend in boustrophedon (serpentine ox-plowing) order from Square 1 at the bottom-left to Square 72 at the top-left across eight horizontal tiers corresponding to the Seven Cakras / Sapta-Lokas plus the Transcendental Crown:

| Row 2 | 10–18 | Svādhiṣṭhāna · Bhuvar-Loka (Water / VAM) | Opens with the first ladder at 10 · Śuddhi (Purification → 23 Svarga-Loka), navigates Īrṣyā (12, Envy) and Dveṣa (16, Jealousy), and awakens 17 · Dayā (Compassion → 69 Brahma-Loka). |
| Row 3 | 19–27 | Maṇipūra · Svar-Loka (Fire / RAM) | The Theater of Karma-Loka (19): 20 · Dāna (Charity → 32), 22 · Dharma-Loka (Righteousness → 60), Kusaṅga (24 → 7) vs. Susaṅga/Satsaṅga (25), Duḥkha (26), and 27 · Paramārtha (Selfless Service → 41). |
| Row 4 | 28–36 | Anāhata · Mahar-Loka (Air / YAM) | Contrasts 28 · Sudharma (Authentic Path → 50) with Adharma (29 → 6), centering on Mahar-Loka (32, Plane of Balance) and culminating in Svaccha (36, Transparency of Consciousness). |
| Row 5 | 37–45 | Viśuddhi · Jana-Loka (Ether / HAM) | Opens with 37 · Jñāna-Loka (Self-Knowledge → 66 Ānanda-Loka), harmonizes Prāṇa, Apāna, Vyāna (38–40), attains Manuṣya-Janma (43), faces Avidyā (44 → 9), and rises via 45 · Suvidyā (Right Knowledge → 67 Rudra-Loka). |
| Row 6 | 46–54 | Ājñā · Tapo-Loka (Mind / OM) | Guided by 46 · Viveka (Conscience → 62 Sukha), harmonizes Sarasvatī/Suṣumṇā (47), Yamunā/Piṅgalā (48), and Gaṅgā/Iḍā (49), avoids Hiṁsā (52 → 35), and reaches 54 · Bhakti-Loka (Supreme Devotion → 68 · Vaikuṇṭha-Loka). |
| Row 7 | 55–63 | Bindu · Satya-Loka (Intellect / AUM) | Houses Oṁkāra (56), Tejo-Loka (58), Satya-Loka (59), and Subuddhi (60), guarded by the three perilous serpents of subtle ego: 55 · Ahaṁkāra (→ 3 Krodha), 61 · Durbuddhi (→ 13 Antarikṣa), and 63 · Tamas (→ 2 Māyā). |
| Row 8 | 64–72 | Sahasrāra · Vaikuṇṭha / Kailāsa | Centers on Square 68 · Vaikuṇṭha-Loka (Mokṣa) at the exact middle column of the top row, flanked by Ānanda-Loka (66), Rudra-Loka (67), Brahma-Loka (69), and the three Guṇas (Sattva 70, Rajas 71, Tamas 72 → 51 Pṛthvī). |
72 - excess, so rolling a 6 from 70 reflects back to 68!). Landing directly on Square 72 (Tamoguṇa) triggers the final serpent, which returns the seeker gently to Square 51 (Pṛthvī — Mother Earth) — from which a single roll of 3 lands on Square 54 (Bhakti-Loka) and carries them home to 68 (Mokṣa)!
