The Marble Lace of Fatehpur

In the courtyard of Fatehpur Sikri's great mosque sits a building carved like lace: the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti (1478–1572), the ridge-hermit whose blessing gave an emperor a son and an empire a capital. Women tie threads on its marble screens praying for children — Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian threads tangled indistinguishable.

• Ivory jalis: geometric screens so fine they read as carved ivory; swastika, lotus, and chakra motifs beside Quranic inlay — Akbar-period synthesis at its most literal
